Walking and Hiking Tracks
The Mahinepua Department of Conservation Reserve and walking track is opposite the Cavalli Beach House and has spectacular views along the marked track. About one hour each way. The track travels the length of the peninsula, mainly along the ridgetop, giving access to the many sheltered bays and providing outstanding coastal views.
The track is graded as “easy” and it’s distance from it’s start is 4km or if you walk from Cavalli Beach House to the track start it’s 8km’s.
There are numerous other hikes available in the surrounding districts.
The Cape Reinga trip is one of our highlights. Salt Air will collect you from our beach in their helicopter and fly you up to Cape Reinga – the top of New Zealand. A wonderful scenic flight up the West Coast over 90 mile beach – landing in the Far North where you are collected for your land tour – which includes a trip to the Cape Reinga Light House, Tapotupotu Bay and the giant sand dunes at Te Paki stream for sand boarding.
Then fly to Henderson Bay for a special lunch and more unique sights before the flight back to the Cavalli Beach House along the stunning east coast – this trip takes 5 – 6 hours and costs start from NZD$4,045 depending on numbers. Click here details on Private Heli Tour Options
Fixed Wing to Cape Reinga
Salt Air also have a fixed wing aeroplane fly-drive half day tour from Kerikeri daily – fly up to Waitiki Landing in the Far North via the west coast and 90 mile beach before landing at their private airstrip just south of the light house.
Your guide will then take you on a 2.5 hour vehicle tour to all the places of interest including, Cape Reinga, Tapotupotu Bay for refreshments and the giant sand dunes at Te Paki for sand tobogganing.
A great 4.5 hours outing for $425.00 per person. Driving to Cape Reinga return is a 6 hour trip – so this flight is a great alternative.
Sightseeing trips by car
A perfect days outing – Matai Bay at the top of Cape Karikari is one (well, actually, two) of the most beautiful beaches in New Zealand and apart from a few weeks after christmas is usually totally deserted – good walking. 5 minutes down the road is the Carrington Resort who have over 100 acres planted in grapes already, with more to come – the winery is on the right hand side coming south and they have a selection of 5 of their best wines to be tasted for $10.00 per person – they also have a bar menu.
However, we suggest that you save eating for the New Zealand famous Mangonui Fish and Chip shop – out over the water at Mangonui in the Doubtless Bay area. This is owned by the fishing boats so the fish is always fresh – and they really do shut in a spell of bad weather ! Also licenced so you can enjoy the freshest of fish with a wine or beer.
The Flax Bush – also in Mangonui, has one of the best ranges of maori craft and weaving, together with ethnic crafts from many parts of the world and is definitely worth a stop if you are looking for “take home” presents.
Take the turnoff to Totara North and just before you come into the village there is a small pub called The Gum Store – full of memorabilia and a good atmosphere.
Mangonui is 40 minutes north of us, Cape Karikari 70 minutes.
The Bay of Islands centre – comprising Paihia and Russell are 75 minutes south of us – all sorts of boating action from Paihia out into the Bay. One of our favourites is the Mack Attack – 90 minute return trip out to the famed Hole in the Rock.
There are also a number of boat trips to suit any taste, including swimming with the dolphins.
A short distance from Paihia township are the historic Waitangi treaty grounds, complete with marae, ceremonial waka and the original treaty house (not to mention a stunning view and cafe).
The historic town of Russell, opposite Paihia, and reached by ferry is well worth a visit – there are a variety of craft shops, museums and restaurants and it is a pretty little village for walking. It can reached either by passenger ferry from Paihia or by car ferry from the nearby port of Opua.
Kerikeri is our nearest town – a fast growing area filled with a large variety of arts and crafts, good restaurants, wineries and coffee bars – a good stop off on your way to Paihia and Russell – or just to visit prior to an excellent lunch at Marsden Estate Winery.
Our most famous kauri forest – the Waipoua with the magnificant ‘Tane Mahuta’ is on the West Coast – opposite us and makes a perfect (although long) day, either coming to us, or departing. The Puketi Forest is closer, around 40 minutes away and has a large number of kauri trees with boardwalk access.
Take a guided tour with Northland Sea Kayaking – who will also provide a personal service from our beach. Levels of fitness required.
The wreck of the Rainbow Warrior and surrounding reefs can be a guided dive with a local dive operator, leaving and returning via Matauri Bay; 15 minutes away.
All equipment supplied. NB: Minimum PADI Open Water
At any of the following nearby courses:
Kauri Cliffs (see more here) – only 15 minutes drive.
Carrington Club – 1 hour drive north.
Waitangi Golf Club – 1 hour drive south.
Kerikeri Golf Club – 40 minute drive south.
